Why Full Liquid Diet Is a Lot More Dangerous

People who drink a diet of full liquid diets can experience serious health consequences, but not just in the short term. A study published on October 20, 2016 in the journal Gastroenterology found that people who did this had reduced stomach acid function which disrupts their ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. Not only is this bad for your digestive system, but it can affect other areas of your life as well such as boosting your risk for developing irritable bowel syndrome when you stop drinking all liquids. They are simply one of the ways that you can lose weight without feeling hungry. Compared to common fasting and cleansing diets, which require you to take in very few calories, full liquid diets don’t limit your caloric intake at all. Instead, they allow you to drink as much as you want.

“Yes,” Corey S. Feldman, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and lead author on the study’s paper found out when he looked over thousands of patients who used the program for weight loss .

“There are several potential risks of the full liquid diets such as dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and reduced nutrient absorption,” he explains.

“Patients who drink solely water lose significant amounts of electrolytes, primarily sodium and chloride. The reduced electrolyte balance is often passed through to foods you eat, causing side effects such as muscle cramps and irritability.”

A person’s level of stomach acid can have a huge impact on their health in many ways. According to Dr. Feldman: “Lower stomach acid means it’s harder [to digest food] which can lead to bloating and flatulence (gas). It also can affect how well you absorb certain nutrients. For example, a nutrient called zinc is not absorbed as well. Zinc deficiencies can cause anemia and a loss of appetite.”

“Yes,” Dr. Feldman adds that, “some patients may drink too much water for someone with stomach acid problems.”

5. Can I get a full liquid diet from my doctor?

If you are at risk of dehydration, or if your stomach acid is so low that you are unable to hold down even liquids , you should ask your doctor to consider prescribing this type of diet as part of your weight loss plan; especially if you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

6. What causes stomach problems during a full liquid diet?

According to Dr. Feldman, there are several reasons why you may have stomach issues during a diet that includes only water: “Rapid drops in blood sugar, dehydration, gastric hyperacidity and infections can cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.”

Fortunately, most stomach issues caused by a full liquid diet go away when you stop drinking only liquids .

Yes. According to Dr. Feldman: “Nutritional deficiencies are a serious concern with diets that eliminate food groups while providing high amounts of calories from carbohydrates. A diet rich in carbohydrates, or sugars, can cause fatigue, headaches, mood swings and lethargy.”

9. How can I make sure I get everything that I need?

Even if you drink only water for a long period of time (up to 2-3 weeks), it is important that you get plenty of other nutrients from your diet as well. “It’s important to eat a balanced diet and take supplements when necessary,” Dr. Feldman notes. “If you eliminate all food groups in the name of weight loss you run the risk of nutritional deficiencies.”

The evidence says yes.

According to Dr. Feldman: “The full liquid diet approach is more effective for weight loss than other diets that eliminate certain foods and/or restrict calories. The full liquid diet causes faster weight loss, and people are satisfied with the program. In addition, people hunger less.”

11. How long can this last?

“The full liquid diet works for a few weeks or months,” explains Dr. Feldman, “then your body will adapt to the lack of food and eventually you will need to add foods back in.”

12. Should I go on this diet?

Dr. Feldman suggests that you don’t try the full liquid diet without first discussing it with your doctor. If you are at risk of dehydration, or if your stomach acid is so low that you are unable to hold down even liquids , you should ask your doctor to consider prescribing this type of diet as part of your weight loss plan.

13. Can I do a different diet for other parts of my life?

Yes. “There are three main types of weight-loss plans: the liquid approach, where you drink mostly water; the restricted calorie programs such as diets that restrict your caloric intake to 1,200 calories per day; and the balanced approach, which involves eating four to five small meals a day,” Dr. Feldman explains. “Depending on each person’s lifestyle, they may choose the liquid approach, restricted calorie approach or balanced approach.”

One reason is because it has been shown to be more successful than other types of weight-loss programs. According to Dr. Feldman: “These types of diets cause faster weight loss and people are satisfied with the program.”
